How to make your carved pumpkin last longer...

My husband always wanted to wait until midnight Halloween (maybe a slight exaggeration) to carve the great chosen pumpkin, and I think a lot of it has to with the icky moldy factor that happens so quickly, especially with our humidity. Here are the steps to help keep it preserved...

1) First, of course- Carve it. Carve like you've never carved before.

2) Spritz it (inside and out) with a spray bottle filled with 1 tablespoon bleach, the rest water. Let it 'rest' for about 20 minutes. This will kill all the bacteria (or a lot of it).

3) Wipe it down with a paper towel or clean cloth, then rub petroleum jelly all over it. wipe away excess. (This will help prevent new mold and bacteria).

4) Try to keep it out of the sun, and cool. Okay, well try, at least.
